The Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress (NPMC) on Friday demanded immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
The NPMC organized a programme on the theme “Nationwide Postcard Campaign for Immediate Implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023” at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, calling for the immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women, which witnessed the participation of Mahila Congress leaders, district representatives, party workers, and supporters from across the state.
Addressing the gathering, speakers stated that the Congress party has consistently supported women’s reservation and political empowerment, from strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions during the leadership of late Rajiv Gandhi to continuously advocating reservation for women in legislative bodies.
The leaders criticized the BJP-led government for passing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam without immediate implementation and linking it with census and delimitation processes, thereby delaying women’s reservation indefinitely.
The programme highlighted concerns that delimitation based solely on future population figures could disturb federal balance and reduce representation for certain regions and states that responsibly controlled population growth.
Speakers maintained that women’s constitutional rights should not be delayed because of administrative or political calculations.

During the event, Mahila Congress leaders demanded immediate implementation of 33% reservation for women; a transparent roadmap for implementation; protection of federal balance; representation for OBC women; and genuine political empowerment instead of symbolic politics.
The speakers further stated that women across India are no longer asking for symbolic promises but are demanding equal participation, dignity, and representation in democracy.
Special emphasis was laid on the contribution of women from Northeast India, acknowledging their leadership, resilience, and role in shaping society and democratic participation.
The programme concluded with a collective appeal urging the Government of India to implement women’s reservation immediately using the existing Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies without further delay.
The event was followed by a postcard campaign and signature drive. The programme reaffirmed the commitment of the Nagaland Pradesh Mahila Congress towards women’s rights, constitutional equality, and inclusive democratic representation.
