The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, in collaboration with the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU), successfully commenced the two-day Orientation Programme on Fire Safety Preparedness & Relief Camp Planning for Dimapur City on May 6 at the DAN Office, Chekiye.
The programme witnessed the active participation of 25 dedicated volunteers along with DNSU executives, who are undergoing intensive training aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in Dimapur.
The first day began with registration followed by a welcome and introductory session led by Vekuzo Lohe, Project Associate, NSDMA. Following this, R Micheal Yanthan, Vice President of DNSU, delivered a brief address expressing sincere appreciation to NSDMA for initiating such a timely and important programme. He highlighted the significance of unity and inclusiveness, noting that the participating volunteers come from diverse tribes and communities. He emphasized that disasters do not discriminate based on tribe or ethnicity, and therefore preparedness and response must be a collective responsibility of all.
This was followed by a comprehensive overview of the project on fire safety preparedness and relief camp planning by Dr Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA, highlighting the objectives and expected outcomes of the initiative. As part of his session, Dr Ruangmei also conducted a team-building activity, effectively demonstrating that the true strength of a group lies in collective support—where the strength of the strongest is shared with and uplifts the weakest.
Participants were then oriented on key concepts such as hazard, risk, and vulnerability assessment, providing a foundational understanding essential for disaster management.
The session on the Basic Concept of Disaster Management was conducted by Rendemo Shitio, Assistant Manager, Response & Communication, NSDMA, further enriching the participants with practical knowledge on response and communication strategies.

The training aims to build a pool of informed and capable volunteers who can assist authorities and communities during disasters, ensuring timely response and better management of crisis situations in Dimapur.
