Preparations underway for the 52nd ASA wrestling meet

Preparations have begun for the much-anticipated 52nd Angami Sports Association (ASA) Wrestling Meet 2024, scheduled to be held on March 16 at the Khouchiezhie (Local Ground) in Kohima.

According to a press release issued by the media team, the ground management team led by the Angami Catholic Union (ACU) is on war footing to prepare the stage for thousands to witness the indigenous sport.

The inaugural ceremony will commence at 9 am, to be graced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio as the Chief Guest and Member of Legislative Assembly Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso as the Guest of Honor.

Among the highlights of the ceremony is the unfurling of the ASA flag, symbolising unity and sportsmanship within the Angami community. This prestigious event will witness the convergence of talent and passion for wrestling, promising an exhilarating display of athleticism and sportsmanship.

“Excitement mounts as the prize money reaches impressive heights, with the champion cashing on Rs. 2,50,000 and second, third, and fourth position holders will be awarded Rs. 1,70,000, Rs. 1,30,000, and Rs. 1,00,000 respectively,” informed the press release.

Additionally, quarter-finalists will receive Rs. 20,000 each, while individuals demonstrating exceptional tactics will be honored with Rs. 15,000 and participants will be acknowledged with a sum of Rs. 2,500, fostering a culture of recognition and appreciation for their dedication to the sport.

Four units – the Northern Angami Sports Association (NASA), Southern Angami Sports Association (SASA), Western Angami Youth Organization (WAYO), and Chakhro Youth Organization (CYO) – will compete in this year’s championship, fielding a total of 60 skilled wrestlers.

18 exceptional wrestlers will be selected to represent the Angami community at the upcoming Nagaland Wrestling Association (NWA) meet slated for March 26, promising to extend the legacy of Angami wrestling prowess on a broader stage.

The Angami Catholic Union is anticipating a robust turnout of approximately 16,000 spectators, to witness the thrilling matches unfold. Ticket rates have been categorised to Donor – Rs. 2000, balcony– Rs. 500, Chair A– Rs. 500, Chair B- Rs 200 and Chair C -Rs -100

The ASA Wrestling Meet 2024 promises to be a celebration of athleticism, skill, and camaraderie, showcasing the rich tapestry of the traditional wrestling heritage within the Angami community.
