Building upon its continued commitment to sustainable practices, the Sangtemla Ward Sanitation Committee has informed that it will be taking a further step by introducing biodegradable, eco-friendly garbage bags that are compostable and degradable under natural conditions, as a replacement for conventional plastic garbage bags.

In accordance with the directive issued by the Mokokchung Municipal Council, banning all single-use plastic (SUP) carry bags—regardless of thickness—and all other forms of  SUP within the municipal jurisdiction, the Sangtemla Ward Sanitation Committee, in collaboration with the Inter-Block Cleanliness Committees and the Sangtemla Youth Association, under the aegis of the Sangtemla Ward Yimden, has been diligently working towards making Sangtemla a plastic-free ward since the announcement of the order in June 2024, stated a notice issued by the committee.

It notified that the bags will be made available at minimal cost through the following representatives of the Inter-Block Cleanliness Committees:

  1. Longsaakum – Convenor, Block 1, 9436-205788.
  2. Ali Imsong – Convenor, Block 2, 9436-917509.
  3. Imtikumzuk – Convenor, Block 3, 8119-000133.
  4. Talisangba – Convenor, Block 4, 8425-824399.
  5. Tiasunep – Convenor, Block 5, 8131-859006.

All funds generated through the sale of the garbage bags will be utilized for the  beautification and cleanliness of Sangtemla Ward.

“This initiative is the result of the tireless and voluntary efforts of a few committed  individuals who are working for the greater good of the community. The Sangtemla Ward Sanitation Committee looks forward to the willing cooperation and participation of all residents to ensure the continued success of this movement toward a cleaner, greener, and plastic-free Sangtemla,” added the Committee.
