As a part of its curriculum, the Sochum (Morung) Study Centre initiated cane basket, knitting and weaving for the children at Waoshu village under Tuensang District on Saturday at Sochum compound
Saolaktang Chang, Warden of Morung Knowledge Centre stated that once or twice a month the students are encouraged to practice these crafts to preserve the rich cultural and traditional heritage through Life Skill Development activities.
Chang highlighted the importance of cane baskets, knitting and weaving which are intrinsic part of the Naga culture throughout the ages. The cane baskets, knitting and weaving clothes are used for daily purposes like carrying water, firewood and during the harvesting period in the rural areas.
After teaching the students the concept of weaving and its place in the craft movement, the children chose a weaving pattern and matching materials and shared their weaving ideas with one another, learning more about the art in the process.
The female students carried out activities of knitting and weaving whereas male students participated in making cane basket with different shapes.
