A student from a school in Kohima remains hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU) after sustaining severe abdominal injuries from alleged assault by fellow students. The family of the student had earlier claimed in a letter that he was beaten up on February 20, 2025 because he “refused to surrender his tiffin during lunch”.
The family had also said that the student was admitted to the ICU on March 26 following a surgery after being diagnosed with “gastrointestinal perforation (a rupture in the stomach or intestine) with peritonitis (an infection in the abdominal cavity)”.
Meanwhile, in a communication dated April 4th, the Principal of the school acknowledged that a student was in the ICU “due to a fight that had occurred on February 20th outside the school campus.” The Principal stated the school management “took immediate and necessary actions” as soon as it became aware of the incident that included visiting the hospital and summoning the students accused of the alleged attack.
The school’s Principal also mentioned that the students’ union had visited the school on April 1st and had also informed the Child Help Line (CHL), whose “executives came and conducted inquiries in the school on Thursday, April 3rd”.
Further, the Principal stated that the he along with the management committee members met the chairman of the village council “to inquire about the status of their investigation” and were informed that a verdict had not been reached yet.
“Given that the village council and the CHL are actively involved in conducting inquiries, the school management has decided to withhold any actions on the students concerned and to wait for the conclusion of the various inquiries”, the statement said.
The principal emphasized that every student is treated with care and assured impartiality in handling the matter as per the school’s rules and regulations. He also appealed for public support and prayers for a swift resolution and expressed hope that such incidents do not recur in the future.
