Tuensang landslide: Phinjang Colony Public Union says only 10% of affected household evacuated, appeals for help

Tuensang: 238 households affected by landslide in Phinjang colony alone

BY | Friday, 9 August, 2024

The Phinjang Colony Public Union (PCPU), Tuensang Town, has claimed that out of 141 households identified for immediate evacuation due to the landslide/land sinking at the colony, only 14 have been evacuated while 17 households are to be moved to a safer location soon. The rest 90% are still in the affected area, it said.

In a press release, the Union informed that a total of 238 households are affected in Phinjang alone, which falls under St. John Ward A, and “to take immediate local initiatives to mitigate the disaster”, a Disaster Management Committee was set up on 8th June 2024. PCPU stated that the Tuensang District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has initiated relief camps “as part of their duty with pressure from the general public”, however pointed out that “PCPU/Disaster Management Committee Phinjang has not received any financial aid towards the ‘proposed local initiative’ to construct gabion structures and laying geo-textile over the area to immediately control the land sinking.

As such the Union requested “those willing to contribute in any way can kindly do so with the knowledge of the PCPU/Disaster Management Committee Phinjang” and asserted that the fund would be directed towards the “immediate mitigation steps” which will be initiated by the Committee.
