For last couple of years, after the declaration of the High School Leaving Certificate Examination, the Chang Wedoshi Setshang (Chang Students’ Conference) and Education officials in Tuensang would be faced by the massive task of placing students in Class 11. There were only four higher secondary schools of which two were government run and two private owned.

However, this year, to everybody’s relieve, the district has another school to cater to its demands for seats in class XI. Government Higher Secondary School, Hakushang will be welcoming Class XI students (Arts Stream) for the first time since the Department of School Education, Nagaland gave the nod.

Hari Prasad Gupta, Assistant Headmaster, GHSS Hakushang, told Nagaland Tribune that the school has arranged for the Educational Block Resource Centre (EBRC) Hall to be utilised as classroom for Class XI for the time being. He also mentioned that 50-60 students will be enrolled in the 2024 batch.

The Assistant Headmaster also stressed that for the smooth functioning of the school, there is urgent requirement to immediately appoint Principal and Vice Principal, subject teachers, multi task staff, Computer Assistant and Grade 4th staff.

Gupta further conveyed a message to the people of Tuensang, stating, “We will give the best education and create a healthy environment for the students and shaping for the betterment of the coming future.”

He also appreciated the work done by Chang Wedoshi Setshang (CWS) for their commitment and dedication to the future of the students.

It may be noted that in 2022, around 180 students seeking admission in Class XI were left out because the GHSS Tuensang and GHSS Thangjam, the only two State run higher secondary schools were filled beyond their capacity. In desperation, CWS hurriedly built one classroom at GHSS Thangjam from its own funds and accommodated 100 students. The remaining 80 students were admitted to GHSS Tuensang, increasing the class strength to 150 in one classroom which significantly affected the study environment.

In 2023, CWS had highlighted that a total of 780 students had applied for admission against the 370 seats in the two GHSSs in the district and halted the admission process demanding for a permanent solution to the crisis.

Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Langasomba Chang, Vice President, CWS said that for the past few years there had been admission crisis in Tuensang where many matriculates were unable to secure admission in the district and were therefore compelled to go out of Tuensang for their further studies, affecting parents’ financial stability and every field of life.

CWS also expressed gratitude to all the individuals, department and various organisations, especially the elected representative who supported the cause of upgrading the school at the earliest.

Chang added “I believe Hakushang Higher secondary will also become an educational hub producing responsible citizens, intellectuals and great personalities”.
