Vamuzo remembered: Yorüba commemorates 25th death anniversary of former CM of Nagaland

Remembering and celebrating the life and contributions of Vamuzo, the Vamuzo Memorial Trust & Chozuba Range Public Organization (CRPO) organized the Former Chief Minister of Nagaland’s 25th Death anniversary on March 22 at Local ground, Yorüba.

Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, speaking at the occasion, reflected on his close knit friendship with late Vamuzo and cherished him as a man of integrity and acknowledged him as a great leader during his time. Rio stated that Lt. Vamuzo’s belief in religion and his commitment towards welfare of people was admirable. He underscored the dedication of Lt. Vamuzo from which today’s leaders take inspiration from and acknowledged Vamuzo’s dedication towards building a community and rural development such as the Compact Area Development Scheme ( CADS ), Village development Board ( VDB ).

MLA Achumbemo Kikon acknowledged Yoruba and Chozuba AC for bearing the struggles for so many years and for supporting Lt Vamuzo continually during his tenure. “For the sake of Naga people and to defend the rights of the people, you all decide to support Lt. Vamuzo and the farsighted beliefs you had upon him is something to be proud of,” said Kikon who thanked Yoruba and Chozuba for contributing immensely for the betterment of Naga people.

Wife of Lt . Vamuzo , Sano Vamuzo speaking her words of remembrance highlighted that the children , their entire household extends heartfelt gratitude to all present to celebrate Lt. Vamuzo’s life and contribution. Sano acknowledged all those who worked alongside Lt. Vamuzo .

Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü, former Chief Minister of Nagaland who also spoke on the occasion asked the people to remember good things Vamuzo had done and urged the people to do good things in remembrace of Vamuzo. I. Imkong, former minister who also spoke, called Vamuzo a decisive leader with resourceful qualities. He added that the Hotel Japfü project was initiated and materialised during Vamuzo’s tenure.

During the event, Zapra Chakhesang (Former Chairman, NPSC), Vezühü Keyho (President, CPO), I. Imkong (Ex-Minister, Nagaland) delivered speeches. Naga Elder and Social activist Niketu Iralu spoke on “Vamuzo’s Legacy: An Idea Whose Time Has Come.” A speech on behalf of the village was presented by Müdilhi Lohe, Head GB, Yorüba.

Nibano V. Swüro, daughter of Vamuzo, presented a song entitled “Puo Ciekhrie Zo Rei Mehoya” which was sung at his funeral. The program was chaired by Thenucho Tünyi, Chairman of the Vamuzo Memorial Trust. A special musical tribute, “Vamuzo Lizo,” was presented by Yorübami Uzuneko, Thüpukha Sapu (Rünümole) song and the congregation sang “Amazing Grace” to conclude the program.

The program included scripture reading by Rev. Vesavo Shijoh, chairman, Chozuba Area Baptist Church Council, prayers and blessings by Pukrolhu Lohe, Pastor, Yoruba Baptist Church and the benediction prayer by Rev. Dr. Kevekhali Lasuh, Senior, Pastor, Chakhesang Baptist Church Kohima.

Vamuzo served as Nagaland’s Chief Minister from 1990 to 1992. On March 22, 2000, observed as Naga Republic Day, Vamuzo Phesao departed for his heavenly home. Born on October 17, 1935, he passed away at the age of 65.
