Wooden bridge over Phumji River in Tuensang district collapses

Tuensang: Bridge is lifeline for four villages- Sangdak, Yonyu, Yokumsang and Kumpung

The wooden bridge over the Phumji River in Tuensang District collapsed on Thursday evening, it has been reported that the unstable bridge broke under the weight of a pickup truck carrying construction material.

The truck too fell into the river but fortunately, the occupants escaped with no serious injuries. The Phumji bridge was in need urgent need of repair when the incident took place.

The bridge connects the Block Headquarter Noksen under Tuensang District and is the lifeline for four villages- Sangdak, Yonyu, Yokumsang and Kumpung.

Bumet Changshao, President of the Block Range, informed that the wooden bridge was constructed by the four villages with contributions and donations from well-wishers under the supervision of Rev Dr Chingmak Chang. He informed that the bridge was actually seven years old.

The road with the bridge over Phumji River is the shortest route from Noken HQ to the four villages for official works which is around 20 km while the longer route is approximately 60 km.

The pickup was carried sand and bricks for construction purpose from Mokokchung and was en route Kumpung village.
