Along with the rest of the world, on the occasion of World Photography Day, the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Nagaland University organised a photography competition and exhibition at the administrative block on August 19.
Guest speaker, Anutosh Deb, delivered an insightful presentation on “Past, Present and Future of Photography.” He discussed the journey of photography from early cameras and film photography to modern digital cameras and smartphones. He also highlighted how technological advancement and social media have transformed photography and increased its influence on society.
Prof Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University addressed the gathering and spoke about the growing importance of photography in society. He highlighted how photography has evolved from traditional cameras to smartphones and social media, becoming a powerful tool for communication and influencing public opinion. He also emphasized its role in preserving history, documenting society, and bringing important stories to the public.

Delivering the welcome address, Dr Arjun Das, Assistant Professor highlighted the importance and evolution of photography as a powerful medium of visual storytelling. He explained how photography preserves memories, documents history, creates social awareness, and influences public opinion. Dr. Das also emphasized the importance of using photography ethically and responsibly.
Declaring the winners of the photography competition, Peter Ki, PRO of Nagaland University highlighted the power of photography by referring to the famous “Napalm Girl” photograph from the Vietnam War. The image showed the suffering caused by war and had a strong impact on American public opinion. The speaker emphasized that photography is not merely a form of art but can influence society, raise awareness, and bring about meaningful change.
Following the formal programme was the photography exhibition which was inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor Prof JK Patnaik. In attendance were Deans, Statutory Officers, HoDs, faculty members, administrative officers, students, and other distinguished guests.
