The Zeliang Students’ Union (ZLSU) successfully convened its 63rd General Convention cum Election on 21 December 2024, in Ngwalwa Village, Peren district. This event, characterized by a spirit of unity and cultural pride, brought together Zeliang students and leaders to deliberate on issues crucial to the advancement and identity of the tribe, the ZLSU stated in a press communique.
Guest speaker, Keyirangding Hegui NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Peren, spoke on the theme of protecting and preserving the Zeliang tribe’s identity, where he underscored the significance of the tribe’s cultural heritage, language, and traditions as fundamental pillars of its identity. He encouraged the student and youth population to uphold these values while embracing modern educational opportunities. Furthermore, he emphasized the necessity of safeguarding ancestral land, which serves as both a source of livelihood and a testament to the tribe’s rich history and heritage.
Hegui articulated that the identity of the Zeliang tribe is intricately linked to both its land and its culture, asserting that the loss of either would equate to a diminished sense of self. He posited that it is the responsibility of every Zeliang intellectual to protect the tribe’s heritage while striving for excellence in various domains of life.
A significant aspect of the event was the election of new office-bearers for the upcoming term (2025-2027). The election process was executed with fairness and transparency, reflecting the principles of integrity and democracy upheld by the union. The newly elected leaders committed to working diligently for the welfare of Zeliang students and the broader community, with a focus on education, cultural preservation, and socio-economic development.
The invocation was delivered by Lungleuhingbe Iheilung, Deacon of the Ngwalwa Baptist Church, followed by a presidential address from Kingsalt Hegwang, the former president of ZLSU, who highlighted the achievements of his administration. Pauramyile Pame presented a special number, and a vote of thanks was offered by the former General Secretary, Sanlak Namdaw. The event concluded with a benediction from Heilamying, Associate Pastor of the Gaili Baptist Church.
