The International Day of Older Persons was celebrated worldwide on 1 October. In Nagaland, the day was celebrated in various districts with a special programme for the senior citizens of the respective area, as reported on Saturday.
Here we take a look at how the day was observed in three more districts.
ZUNHEBOTO
Along with other districts in Nagaland, Zunheboto celebrated the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October.
The event was organised by the Naga Senior Citizens Forum Zunheboto District Unit in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Legal Services Authority of Zunheboto. It was held at Aghunato Area GB’s Hall under the theme ‘The resilience and contribution of older women’.
The Naga Senior Citizens Forum Zunheboto District Unit was formed on 14 November 2008 under the initiatives of H S Rotokha, the founding member. The organisation carries the motto ‘Respect and care for senior citizens’.
During the programme, the senior citizen award was given to Khuivi Achumi (102 years old), Sukihe Assumi (99 years old) and Xuivu Achumi (99 years old).
Zhoi Lohe, SDO, ADC Aghunato, while speaking during the program as the guest of honour lauded the Naga Senior Citizens Forum Zunheboto District Unit for taking the initiative to observe the day and provide monetary gifts to senior citizens as a gesture of appreciation. He encouraged the senior citizens to be a guiding force to the younger generation.
Pukhayi Sumi, Advisor Food & Civil Supply, Metrology, as the special guest called upon the Sümi to preserve good values for the younger generation.
He encouraged the elders to teach meaningful valuable advice to the children. Putting God first, we can revive our Sümi community, the advisor said and called upon the younger generation to work for the progress of the future.
PHEK
Mon celebrates International Day of Older Persons.
Phek District observed the International Day of Older Persons 2022 on 1 October at Town Hall, Phek.
Razukhru D Vasa, Project Director, DRDA Phek, spoke on the theme ‘The Resilience of Older Women’. He said aging is a blessing as mentioned in the Bible “Gray hair is a Crown”. He also encouraged the older people to choose active living.
Short speeches were also given by Dr Ngopelo, Sr Medical Officer, and Kelhriengunou, Field Response Officer NHSU.
MON
S Nyakba of Monyakshu Village and Yingnyu Konyak of Gan Village were felicitated on International Day of Older Persons in Mon.
The Department of Social Welfare Mon organized the celebration of International Day of Older Persons with the theme, ‘The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women’ on 1 October at DRDA Conference Hall, Mon.
Two elderly persons – S Nyakba of Monyakshu Village and Yingnyu Konyak of Gan Village – were felicitated for their contributions to society.
Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, DC Mon, graced the occasion as the special guest. Verma in his speech spoke on the role played by the older citizens in moulding and shaping society.
He urged them to take care of their health and wellbeing and make full use of the government schemes available to them.
Y Tauhong Ngonyen, District Welfare Officer, thanked all the elderly people for their presence in making the celebration a success.
