Nagaland Police organised a 5-km Awareness Run Against Drugs in Kohima on June 26 to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, with 308 participants joining the event to promote a drug-free society.

Held on the theme “One Run, One Voice, A Drug-Free Nagaland – Choose Life, Not Drugs,” the run covered the route from High School Junction to the Police Headquarters (PHQ) and was flagged off by ADGP (Administration) Renchamo P Kikon, IPS.

Addressing the participants, Director General of Police (DGP), Rupin Sharma, IPS, expressed concern over the growing menace of drug peddling and substance abuse in Nagaland, stating that the easy availability of narcotic substances continues to pose a serious threat, particularly to the youth.

He called for greater vigilance and collective action from all sections of society.

Sharma emphasised that effective rehabilitation requires proper psychological and clinical counselling. He observed that many people often fail to distinguish between psychological or medical counselling and religious counselling. While religion provides moral and ethical guidance, he noted that addiction requires professional treatment and medical intervention. He also pointed out that the State’s rehabilitation infrastructure remains inadequate.

Highlighting the potential role of trained professionals, Sharma said there are many educated youths with backgrounds in psychology and related fields who remain unemployed and could be further trained to assist in counselling and rehabilitation services. He noted that there is the need to promote a culture of clinical and psychological counselling.

He stated that drugs are not a solution to challenges such as depression, unemployment or financial hardship, but instead worsen such problems and have adverse consequences for individuals, families and communities.

Sharma further encouraged citizens to actively cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting cases of drug abuse and trafficking, noting that such actions could help save lives. He assured that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential. He urged the youth to make informed choices and seek appropriate help and support when faced with difficulties.
