The issue of firecracker use during festive celebrations was raised in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly during a starred question by MLA Nuklutoshi from the National People’s Party (NPP).

During the discussion, the legislator questioned why firecrackers are restricted during Diwali but not during Christmas and New Year’s Day celebrations. He highlighted the health and environmental hazards caused by firecrackers and criticized the practice of spending large amounts of money on what he described as momentary entertainment that can cause significant harm, particularly to the elderly.

The MLA further argued that the use of firecrackers is not part of traditional Naga culture and expressed concern over what he described as growing public indifference to government directives. He appealed to the House to consider imposing a complete ban on firecrackers in the state, noting that many people are not adhering to the instructions issued by the Supreme Court of India.

Responding to the query, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister, Yanthungo Patton clarified that the Supreme Court has not imposed a total ban on firecrackers. Instead, he said the court has allowed a limited one-hour window for bursting firecrackers during Diwali, Christmas, and New Year celebrations.

Patton informed the House that the police and administration have consistently issued public notices and directions in 2023, 2024, and 2025 to enforce these guidelines. However, he emphasized that the government alone cannot manage the situation and called for cooperation from civil society organisations and the public.

He assured members that the department is intensifying its efforts and taking all necessary steps to curb the misuse of firecrackers in the state.
