The Kohima Sumi Students’ Union (KSSU) on March 28 held its 2nd Annual Sports Day at TM Ground, Kohima, on the theme “Building Bonds through Games.”

Gracing the occasion, MLA of 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency, Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso, described the theme as timely and relevant, stating that the programme reflects the need for unity in Naga society. He said sports serve as a powerful medium to foster unity, not only among players on the field but also among spectators by promoting understanding and friendship.

Addressing the students, he acknowledged the sacrifices made by parents to support their education and encouraged them to strive for excellence. He remarked that in today’s competitive world, students represent the “fields” of their parents, and success depends on their efforts and results.

Highlighting challenges faced by Naga society, the legislator pointed to tribalism as a major concern and urged advanced tribes to take the lead in overcoming divisions. He also expressed concern over excessive expenditure during elections, stating that capable individuals are often discouraged from contesting due to the perception that leadership is tied to wealth.

Calling for change, he urged youngsters to elect leaders based on merit rather than financial status.

Drawing an analogy, Dr Rhutso likened society to an octopus, where each arm represents different tribes and communities, and emphasized that progress requires strong connections and collective effort.

He further stressed that education alone does not guarantee employment without skills and urged youth to take advantage of government programmes focused on skill development and entrepreneurship. Encouraging a shift in mindset, he called on young people to step out of their comfort zones and work hard to achieve success.

Referring to the recently concluded Eighth Session of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, Dr. Rhutso noted that Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio had allocated ₹20 lakh for each Assembly constituency aimed at promoting entrepreneurship and skill development. He encouraged youth to actively participate in training and workshops under such initiatives.

Dr Rhutso also appreciated the hospitality of the Sumi community, drawing from his experiences through various engagements, including the Chief Minister Mobile Operation Theatre (CMMOT) conducted across the state.

Earlier, the programme began with a welcome address by KSSU president Akito Zhimomi, while the oath-taking ceremony was administered by Games and Sports Secretary Ghuvito Achumi.

The programme was compered by Akaho Wotsa and Evis L. Chophy. Invocation was offered by Lujeka Kinimi, Associate Youth Pastor (SBCK), while a special song was presented by Aloli Achumi. Presentation and honouring of guests and dignitaries was led by Kavitoli Jakhalu, Assistant Professor and Vice President, Kohima Sümi Totimi Hoho. The benediction was pronounced by Tovi Shohe, Associate Youth Pastor (SABAK).

Students competed in events including football, volleyball, spear kicking, among others.
