Night curfew imposed in Longkhum, Mangmetong and Alichen areas ahead of Koridang by-election

District Magistrate, Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, has imposed night curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, in Longkhum Village, Mangmetong Village and Alichen area (including 2nd NAP Camp) under Mokokchung district.

The order (No. DC-MKG/CON-JUD/2025-26/134), issued on April 6, stated that there is a likelihood of breach of public peace and tranquillity in the said areas under the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency, which may endanger human life and property.

It further stated that in view of the upcoming bye-election to 28-Koridang AC, the Model Code of Conduct is in force across Mokokchung district and maintenance of law and order is essential for conducting the election in a free, fair and peaceful manner.

The order was issued based on reports received from Sector Magistrates and the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, and upon assessment of the prevailing law and order situation. The District Magistrate stated that immediate preventive measures were necessary to prevent any breach of peace and to ensure tranquillity in the affected areas.

As per the order, assembly of five or more persons has been strictly prohibited within the jurisdiction of Longkhum Village, Mangmetong Village and Alichen area (including 2nd NAP Camp).

The curfew will remain in force daily from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Exemptions have been granted to police, armed forces and security personnel on duty; magistrates and government officials on official or election duty; medical personnel, ambulance and emergency services; and individuals engaged in essential or emergency services.

The order warned that failure to comply will invite prosecution under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and other relevant provisions of law.

It stated that the order has come into immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders. Considering the urgency of the situation, the order has been passed ex parte.
