The NSS unit of Zisaji Presidency College (ZPC) Kiphire conducted an awareness programme at Okhe village, on April 21 on the theme “Maximizing Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life”.

The programme was organized as part of the 8th edition of Poshan Pakhwada 2026.

The programme began with an opening remark by M Leiwang Konyak, Programme Officer, NSS unit, ZPC.

Altogether 20 volunteers led by the Programme Officer participated. Three volunteers spoke on key topics: the importance of mother and child nutrition, early stimulation for brain development, and the role of parents and community in minimising screen time.

Danglila, NSS volunteer, speaking on Mother and Child Nutrition, stressed that mother and child nutrition plays a vital role in ensuring healthy growth and development. It can be divided into three key stages: pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood, each requiring proper care and attention.

She added that during pregnancy, a mother’s diet directly impacts the unborn child. Consuming foods rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins is essential, while harmful substances like tobacco must be avoided.

She said in infancy, exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months is highly recommended, as it provides complete nutrition and strengthens immunity. After six months, soft and nutritious complementary foods should be introduced along with continued breastfeeding. Early childhood (2–6 years) is a period of rapid physical and brain development, she added.
