As part of the yearlong celebration, Akashvani Mokokchung in collaboration with Queen Mary Higher Secondary School (QMHSS), Mokokchung, organised a marathon race on May 8 to commemorate 90 years of Akashvani on the theme “Run for Health, Unity & Discipline.”
A total of 108 students, comprising both boys and girls, participated in the race.
In the boys category, Nungshimaong Longkumer secured the first position, followed by Tarenkaba in second place and Kichar Kichu in third. Winners in both the categories were awarded cash prizes, certificates and medals, while certificates were also presented to all the participants.
In the girls category, Opanglemla Jamir emerged as the winner, while Sentili Pamei and Shongmou Lam secured the second and third positions respectively.
In her address, Rev Sr Flowerlit, Vice Principal, OMHSS extended a warm welcome to all participants and attendees.
Referring to the theme of the event, she said that “Run for Health, Unity and Discipline” reminds everyone that education is not confined to classrooms alone but is also nurtured through discipline, physical fitness, unity, and determination.
She described the marathon as “a beautiful initiative that encourages healthy living while strengthening the spirit of togetherness amongst us.”
While commemorating the 90 year journey of Akashvani, she acknowledged its contribution in connecting people, spreading awareness, and serving society through information and communication.
Addressing the participants, she said their presence reflected courage, commitment, and sportsmanship, and that participation with sincerity and discipline is in itself a great achievement regardless of the outcome of the race.
She also appreciated the organisers, teachers, and all those working behind the scenes for their efforts in making the programme possible. She further expressed hope that the event would inspire everyone to lead a healthy, disciplined, and united life and called upon all present to enjoy the programme with joy, fairness, and mutual respect.

Delivering the words of appreciation, Habemo Ngullie, HOP/PEX, Akashvani Mokokchung stated that it was a privilege for Akashvani Mokokchung to be part of the marathon organised in collaboration with QMHSS as part of the celebration marking 90 years of Akashvani/All India Radio.
He expressed gratitude to the Principal of QMHSS for the support extended towards organising the event and acknowledged the cooperation of the institution in making the programme possible.
Ngullie also appreciated the efforts of the Sports Committee and Organisers, stating that their planning, coordination, and teamwork ensured the smooth conduct of the marathon.
He further thanked the teachers of the school for their guidance, presence, and support towards the success of the programme.
Special appreciation was also extended to the volunteers who worked behind the scenes for their discipline and dedication in managing the event.
Congratulating all the runners, he said that the participants had brought the marathon to life through their energy, determination, and sportsmanship, and added that the event reflected the spirit of participation with patience and purpose.
He further stated that the marathon carried significance beyond sports as it commemorated 90 years of Akashvani, which, he said, has connected people across regions, languages, and cultures over the decades.
“For nine decades, Akashvani has been a trusted voice informing, educating and inspiring generations,” he said, adding that the marathon also aimed at promoting health, unity, and discipline among the people.
He concluded by thanking everyone who contributed towards the success of the programme and expressed appreciation to all attendees for their presence and encouragement, which made the occasion meaningful and memorable.
The programme was chaired by Assistant Teacher Anita Rai. Rev Sr Elizabeth, Headmistress of QMHSS, delivered the invocation, while Prize distribution was conducted by Aososang, Assistant Teacher, followed by benediction by Benjungrenla, Assistant Teacher. The programme concluded with the school anthem led by Katienla, School Prime Minister.
