The Tribal Council, Purana Bazar, East Dimapur has strongly appealed to the Advisor for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of Nagaland, to urgently intervene in the worsening garbage disposal crisis and public health concerns affecting residents of East Dimapur.
In a representation, Chairman of the Tribal Council, Purana Bazar, East Dimapur, Tohoshe Awomi stated that the people of East Dimapur had welcomed the formation of the East Dimapur Council through the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections with great hope and expectation.
According to the Council, citizens believed that the newly formed council would usher in meaningful development, better civic administration, improved sanitation, and enhanced living conditions for the public.
However, the Council expressed concern that development should not remain limited only to the construction of roads and drainage systems, but must also include proper management of essential public services that directly affect the health, safety, environment and dignity of the people.
Highlighting the present situation, the Council said residents of East Dimapur are facing a serious crisis due to the absence of a proper garbage disposal and waste management system. It alleged that garbage is currently being dumped openly in public spaces, including along the National Highway and within the city area, creating an unhealthy, and unbearable environment for the public.

The representation stated that the issue has become increasingly alarming, with immediate government intervention now becoming necessary.
The Council pointed out that foul smell from the accumulated waste has made it extremely difficult for commuters, nearby residents, shopkeepers, students, and pedestrians to pass through the affected areas comfortably. It further stated that garbage accumulation is becoming a serious public health hazard.
Stressing the seriousness of the issue, the Council maintained that the matter should not be viewed merely as a cleanliness concern, but as a pressing issue related to public health, dignity and well-being of thousands of citizens. A city cannot progress while garbage is openly piled in public spaces where people travel and live every day, it stated.
The Council requested the government and the concerned authorities to treat this matter as a priority issue rather than delaying action further. It said a permanent and scientifically managed garbage dumping and waste processing site must be identified and purchased immediately.
Proper waste management policies, regular garbage collection systems, sanitation monitoring, and environmental safety measures should also be implemented without delay, the Council stated.
The Council further stated that the citizens of East Dimapur deserve a clean, healthy, and safe environment.
It urged the government to take responsible and immediate steps to resolve this crisis before the situation worsens further.
