As part of the weeklong celebration of World Environment Day 2026, the Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) conducted a plantation drive at the Kohima Solid Waste Management (SWM) Plant, Lerie, on June 6.
The programme was organized in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action.”
Councillors participated in the plantation activity to promote environmental conservation and sustainable development.
During the visit, the councillors also toured the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) Plant to gain firsthand experience of the on-ground implementation of solid waste management practices and to better understand the city’s waste processing and resource recovery mechanisms.
KDLSA:

The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) observed World Environment Day 2026 on the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. Our Future,” by organizing a plantation and cleanliness drive along the stretch from KMC Parking, Upper Agri Colony to the Kohima Science College, Jotsoma Gate, on June 5.
The highlight of the programme was the participation of Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, S Supongmeren Jamir, who joined the plantation drive alongside the KDLSA team.
The programme was chaired by Kusalu Lohe, Panel Lawyer, KDLSA. Welcoming the participants, Cheliam Khiamniungan, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, KDLSA, emphasized the significance of collective efforts towards environmental conservation.
Delivering the keynote address, Mezivolu T Therieh, Chairperson, KDLSA and Principal District & Sessions Judge, Kohima, expressed gratitude to the district administration for its logistical support and acknowledged the generous contribution of fruit tree saplings by the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Kohima, and Entrepreneur Associates. The saplings included chestnut, guava, wild apple and cherry trees.
In her address, Therieh underscored the importance of protecting and preserving the environment, describing it as an investment in the future. She highlighted that every individual can contribute to environmental conservation through small yet meaningful actions and encouraged participants to continue promoting a greener and healthier environment. She also urged everyone to maintain cleanliness by ensuring proper disposal of waste at designated places.
Vote of thanks was delivered by Nuhuvolu, Panel Lawyer, KDLSA.
As part of the observance, KDLSA members and interns from St. Joseph College and Don Bosco College planted a total of 130 tree saplings, reaffirming their commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
Pughoboto Forest Range Office:

World Environment Day 2026 was observed with great enthusiasm at the Pughoboto Forest Range Office, Pughoboto, on the global theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The programme was organized by the Pughoboto Forest Range Office in collaboration with the Sub-Divisional Planning and Development Board (SDPDB), Pughoboto and held on June 5.
The event was graced by Dr Sukhato A. Sema, MLA, as the Special Guest, while Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Zunheboto, attended as the Special Invitee. The programme witnessed the participation of school students, village leaders, civil society organizations, church representatives, and government officials.

A major highlight of the celebration was a mass tree plantation drive coupled with the geotagging of planted saplings to ensure effective monitoring and accountability. Mahogany timber saplings along with other saplings were also distributed to villages and attendees, encouraging wider community participation in environmental conservation efforts.
Another significant feature of the programme was the signing of a climate action pledge by all attendees, including Special Guest, Dr Sukhato A Sema, MLA, Meyazungba Jamir, NCS, ADC and Vice Chairman SDPDB Pughoboto, Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, DFO Zunheboto, government officials, village leaders, students, and members of civil society organizations. Through the pledge, participants committed themselves to reducing their environmental footprint by minimizing energy and water wastage in their daily lives, saying no to single-use plastics by opting for reusable and sustainable alternatives, supporting the transition to renewable energy while protecting local ecosystems, and actively advocating for urgent climate solutions within their communities.
The collective pledge reflected a shared determination to translate environmental awareness into meaningful action and contribute towards a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
Addressing the gathering, Special Guest, Dr Sukhato A Sema, MLA, emphasized the importance of trees and maintaining a clean environment for future generations. He highlighted the essential elements that sustain life on earth, particularly clean air and water, and urged citizens to rebuild what has been lost through indiscriminate destruction of nature by planting more trees.
Encouraging the public to make full use of technological opportunities available today, he called upon everyone to plant trees wholeheartedly, not merely for human benefit but as a responsibility entrusted by God for the welfare of all creation.
Delivering the keynote address, Obed Bohovi Swu, SFS, DFO Zunheboto, expressed the need for the inclusion of legislators and community leaders in the celebration, stating that environmental stewardship becomes more meaningful when leaders lead from the front.
He informed that saplings had also been distributed to institutions such as police stations, churches, and other stakeholders to promote inclusivity in conservation efforts. Reiterating the national campaign theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, he stressed that World Environment Day should be celebrated with purpose and lasting impact.
He further underscored the innate spirit of community social responsibility among the Naga people, urging citizens to work collectively for the betterment of their own communities rather than relying solely on government intervention. He also emphasized the need for effective and sincere implementation of government schemes at the grassroots level.
In his short address, Meyazungba Jamir, NCS, ADC, congratulated and appreciated the Forest Department for organizing a meaningful programme. He highlighted the importance of community participation in ensuring the success of government initiatives and called upon students’ organizations to take responsibility for nurturing and protecting the planted saplings. He further stressed the need for conservation of natural resources to prevent their overexploitation and ensure sustainability for future generations.
The programme was chaired by Vinoto K Rochill, Dy. Range Officer (i/c), Pughoboto Range, Zunheboto Division. The invocation was pronounced by Pastor Ahovi Swu of Pughoboto Town Baptist Church, while the benediction was delivered by Pastor Kughato Achumi of Nagaland Christian Revival Church, Pughoboto. The vote of thanks was proposed by Akuto Shohe, PA to the Deputy Commissioner.
Earlier in the day, the SDPDB Meeting for June 2026 was held prior to the World Environment Day programme. A brief farewell programme was also organized in honour of the outgoing ADC, Meyazungba Jamir, NCS. During the farewell, Dr. Sukhato A. Sema expressed gratitude and appreciation for the ADC’s dedicated service and contributions to the subdivision. The MLA also sought support from the Forest Department for the development of a recreational park in the area.
In his farewell remarks, Meyazungba Jamir thanked the people and stakeholders of Pughoboto for their cooperation and support during his tenure.
The celebration concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work collectively towards environmental protection, sustainable development, and a greener future for generations to come.
