Nagaland celebrated 10th year of Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMS) on June 9 with Minister of Health & Family Welfare, P Paiwang Konyak launching  the programme.

It is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), Government of India which aimed at providing fixed-day, assured, comprehensive and quality antenatal Care Services to pregnant women, particularly during the second and third trimesters of their pregnancy.

During the short program, Paiwang stated that over these ten years in the state of Nagaland, doctors and gynaecologists have not waited for mothers to come to them but specialists have travelled to critical health facilities (PHCs/CHCs) to ensure that no mother is left behind, and any high risk is detected early.

Stating that gynaecologists have reached critical locations with portable ultrasound through the National Health Mission, he also mentioned that in these ten years of PMSMA sessions in the State more than 23,000 pregnant women have received antenatal care and most importantly 2303 high-risk pregnancies were identified and received early treatment.

He acknowledged the specialist, Doctors, Nurses, ANMs, ASHAs who are working relentlessly, without whom the program would not have been a success. While celebrating this milestone, Paiwang appealed to renew our commitment to reach even more mothers, in even the most remote corners of our State. He also released a short video on the ten years of PMSMA in Nagaland.

Observed on the 9th of every month, the programme has strengthened access to specialist-led antenatal care services and contributed to improving the continuum of maternal healthcare across the country. Over the years, PMSMA has played a significant role in the early identification and management of High-Risk Pregnancies (HRPs) through specialist consultations, enhanced diagnostic services and referral linkages. Under Extended PMSMA (e-PMSMA), the department is further ensuring name-based tracking and follow-up of identified HRPs until delivery and up to 45 days postpartum.

As part of the 10 years celebration on the 9th of June, a nationwide Special PMSMA session was organized across all designated PMSMA facilities by specialist as well as in all Public Health facilities. Besides, additional PMSMA days (under Extended PMSMA) will be organized during the month of June. In Nagaland at present, there are 60 designated Health Units providing PMSMA facilities comprising of District Hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and HWCs across the State which will be providing the specialized services along with the rest of the Health Units. Apart from that all functional Health & Wellness Centers (HWCs) in the State totalling to 336 will also be providing the services. Not only that, HWCs will also facilitate tele -consultation wherever required with specialist through eSanjeevani- National Telemedicine Service.
