The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nagaland on Monday observed the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee at its State Headquarters in Kohima, with party leaders recalling his contributions to education, industrial development and nation-building while urging the younger generation to emulate his ideals of service and integrity.

Delivering the keynote address, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader, Yanthungo Patton said Dr Mookerjee’s life reflected unwavering commitment to the nation, describing him as a visionary whose principles continue to inspire generations. He said Mookerjee believed that a nation’s progress depended on educated, disciplined and morally upright citizens.

Speaking about his contributions to the education sector, Patton noted that Dr Mookerjee became one of the youngest Vice-Chancellors of Calcutta University, where he introduced reforms, promoted Indian languages and culture alongside modern education, and encouraged scientific research and skill development to prepare youth for national development.

Patton also highlighted Dr Mookerjee’s role as Independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, stating that he laid the groundwork for the country’s industrial growth and helped strengthen key public institutions during the early years after Independence.

Recalling his political journey, the Deputy Chief Minister said Dr Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951 with the vision of promoting national service, democratic values and disciplined public life. He added that the movement eventually evolved into today’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
