A Khiamniungan inhabited village in Myanmar was burnt to the ground, sparing a few houses, sources informed. The incident in the village, which is home to 72 households, happened on 2 February 2023, it added.

The fire at Chiu village reportedly started around 2 pm when the villagers were in the fields and continued to burn till around 5 pm. Upon seeing the flames from afar, the villagers rushed home, but the blaze had spread too far to save most of their homes.

According to an unconfirmed report, the fire was caused by a solar battery blast, and it is unlikely that authorities could have done much to help douse the blaze. Fortunately, no human casualty has been informed.

The affected victims are said to be taking shelter with residents who narrowly escaped the fire on the fateful afternoon.

Sources have said that the Khiamniungan Tribal Council will be travelling to Chiu Village soon. The Indian Red Cross society, Noklak branch will be moving out from Kohima on Saturday, sources also reported.
