Videos have been circulating on social media platforms showing people throwing stones down from the roof of a tall building decorated with Bharatiya Janata Party flags. The building allegedly belongs to S Pangnyu Phom, the BJP candidate for 50 Longleng Assembly Constituency and Nagaland’s Minister for Health & Family Welfare.
As the stones continue to hit the tin roofs of the houses in the neighbourhood, the narrator in the videos can be heard questioning the motive of the people and who they were being aimed at. Even more disturbing is that in one of the videos, security personnel can be seen standing on road as the narrator claims that they are not taking action.
In another video, people can be seen shouting from another building with Nationalist Congress Party flags.
Sources have said that the clash may be a continuation of Monday’s commotion where the supporters of BJP and NCP were said to have had a confrontation.
Nagaland held the General Election to the Legislative Assembly yesterday.
A video has also surfaced where veteran politician S Pangnyu Phom and his supporters are shown insisting to cast votes even after the official polling hours. Phom can be seen and shouting aggressively “Kholo” (open) at the security personnel asking that the gate of the polling station be opened.
The video also captures the BJP candidate being handed out voters’ slips by people.
Later he says, “Yeh mere gaon hai” (This is my village), “veteran hai, four times minister hai” (I am a veteran and four-time minister.”
A distressed man can be then heard saying, “Percentage se zyada vote ho chuki hai, cancel ho jai ga… 89 ho chuka hai” (The percentage of votes have exceeded the limit, it will be cancelled…. It has reached 89%).
Four candidates had contested for the 50 Longleng A/C – BJP’s S. Pangnyu Phom, NCP’s A. Ponshi Phom, INC’s Denngan Y. Avennoho and Independent candidate Phuyam.
