Abu Metha, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, Chairman of the Investment & Development Authority of Nagaland, and Vice President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), held a crucial meeting in New Delhi with Dr Lalit K. Bhanod, Chairman of the Planning Committee of AFI.
DIPR informed that the meeting focused on charting out roadmaps to promote athletics and track and field, with special emphasis on developing talent in the northeastern region, particularly in Nagaland.
In the meeting, Metha extended his heartiest congratulations to Dr Bhanod and the AFI for the outstanding performance of the Indian Athletics Team at the recent Asian Athletics Championships in Thailand. India’s remarkable feat of securing a record-breaking 27 medals was recognized, and the AFI received accolades as the Best Performing Federation at the prestigious Asian Athletics Association Awards Ceremony.
Accompanying Abu Metha in the discussion were Anju Bobby George, the former champion long jumper and Vice President of AFI, and Radhakrishnan, the Chief National Coach. Together, they explored various plans to elevate athletics in the northeastern region, particularly in Nagaland.
One of the major proposals discussed was the introduction of a top-level education program for coaches and technical officials, under the patronage of the AFI, to be held exclusively in Nagaland. This initiative aims to equip coaches and officials with advanced skills, enhancing their expertise in nurturing and guiding young athletes in the region.

Another highlight of the meeting was the proposal for a special coaching camp, which will be overseen by national and international coaches. This camp is designed to identify and develop talented athletes in Nagaland, providing them with the necessary guidance and support to realize their full potential.
The officials also noted the significant progress made in the region. Previously, Nagaland had successfully hosted a capacity-building workshop for technical officials from the northeastern states in Kohima. As a result of this workshop, officials who completed the AFI certification course were given opportunities to officiate at various national-level competitions, including the National Games and the Khelo India Games. Moreover, Nagaland had also showcased its capability by hosting the South Asian Cross Country Championships, with the AFI providing valuable guidance.
Appreciating the constant support and guidance from the AFI, Metha expressed his gratitude to President Adille Sumariwala and Planning Chairman Dr Bhanod for their dedication and special focus on uplifting sports in the northeastern region. With these strategic roadmaps in place, Nagaland Athletics, in collaboration with the AFI, aims to nurture and develop young athletes into future champions, propelling India’s track and field prowess to greater heights.
