Dr Chumben Murry inaugurates 28th Wokha T20 Winter Cricket Challenge

Wokha: Defending champion Highlanders CC play Imperial CC in first match

Dr Chumben Murry, Advisor to Chief Minister, on Wednesday, inaugurated the28th Edition of T20 Winter Cricket Challenge at Public ground, Wokha. The tournament is being organised by Senior Noble Klan under the theme “Green Cover Drive”.

In his address, Special Guest Dr Murry appreciated the organisers for holding the tournament since 1996. He also lauded Senior Noble Klan for spreading awareness on climate issues through sports and urged all individuals in Nagaland to contribute towards a green and clean environment.

Dr Murry read out a message conveyed by the President of Nagaland Cricket Association, Kechangulie Rio where Rio had mentioned that NCA has been taking keen interest in Wokha T20 Winter Cricket Challenge and has been supporting it since 2021. NCA also appreciated the initiative as it has given a platform to many good cricket players from the district.

Dr Murry further encouraged all the participants to play with team spirit in order to have cohesiveness.

Theme speaker, Elithung Odyuo, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Wokha Forest Division said that the small things we do today will have a big impact in our future and if we work together as a team, we will achieve a better, a cleaner and a greener Wokha and Nagaland.

Odyuo pointed out that environmental degradation is causing lots of problems and likewise pollution related health concerns have been increasing every year, for which he urged and encouraged every individual to take responsibility for a better future. He also stated that it is not only the responsibility of the environmentalist, the conservationist or the forest department but of every individual to take responsible steps in making a green and cleaner Nagaland.

In the inaugural match of the T20 Winter Cricket Challenge, defending champion Highlanders Cricket Club from Dimapur played against Imperial Cricket Club.

Imperials won the toss and opted to bat first. With a contribution of Md. Suhil (27), skipper Abemo Kikon (16) and Raj Chetri (15), they set a victory target of 118 losing all the 10 wickets in 19.4 overs.

To chase the target, Hekito Aye and Jitu came as the opening pair and scored 40 and 19 respectively. Asif Washimul made the run chase easier by scoring a quickfire of 49 runs with a help of 5 sixers and 4 boundaries. Highlanders registered their first win by 9 wickets in 9.4 overs and Asif Washimul was awarded with Man of the Match.
