Amid the ongoing
The Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) and All Sumi Students’ Union (SKK) has sought clarification on the “perplexing nature” of the statement released by Advisor of School Education & SCERT, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome on 16th February. The statement which was meant to clarify his earlier remark on the recruitment of Ao and Sema candidates for the post of primary teachers for a decade, has only raised more questions, the student bodies have said in a joint press release.
In his statement titled ‘Issued in the Interest of Public Safety’, the Advisor had stated, “To those who feel that my opinion is stochastically straddled to influence employment latitudes, let me assure you that public policies are not formulated to be biased” and urged for “discernment and understanding.”
However, AKM and SKK has expressed disappointment that he had not retracted the statement Dr Yhome had made on 6th February 2024. “… his reluctance and unwillingness to accept the outrage causes is clearly understood in the bombastic language defensive sentences of his rather ‘Justification Statement,’ the unions maintained.

Asking immediate clarification on the true meaning behind the ‘Issued in the Interest of Public Safety’ statement, AKM and SKK questioned if the Advisor meant to imply that the Ao and Sumis are unsafe and that they pose a threat to the Nagas.
“… the language employed in Dr Yhome’s statement is deeply troubling,” the student bodies said, adding that the derogatory tone and implications of the statement are “unacceptable and do not reflect the values of our society.”
AKM and SKK cautioned that if the Advisor fails to retract his statement that “carries undertones of discrimination and bias”, they would initiate “appropriate actions”.
Further, the Unions appealed to their apex tribe bodies, Ao Senden and Sumi Hoho, to refrain from attending any government events until this matter reaches a logical resolution.
