On account of World Environment Day, a Half Marathon for all the schools of Longleng was organized by Longleng Forest Division in Collaboration with NBSE and World Vision India on the theme, “Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience” on June 5, informed a DIPR report.
In his speech, Divisional Forest Officer, Longleng, Tokugha Chophy highlighted about the history and significance of World Environment Day to the gathering, and further elaborated on the role of students in spreading awareness to the general public.
He spoke about the Importance of planting trees and also asserted that many people today were claiming to have planted thousands of tress without taking proper care of its growth. Thus, he added that it would be very fruitful if individuals plant few or more trees, and take proper care of it during the initial years, to create oxygen space for ourselves. He also spoke about the importance of preserving and conserving wildlife and its species, as all the insects, birds and animals were interlinked. He then led the gathering in taking a pledge to protect the environment.

Prize distribution for the half marathon was done by Chepe-ü Koza, Forest Range Officer, Longleng Division, wherein for the boys section, Katlong Phom of Good Shepherd School secured the 1st position, Monglong Phom of St. Joseph School bagged 2nd position and Phaushei Phom of St. Joseph School in 3rd position. For the Girls category, Yemten Phom of St. Joseph School was declared 1st position, Layen of Good Shepherd School, 2nd position and Lipah Phom of St. Joseph School, bagged 3rd position.
Earlier, students of Christian School Longleng, performed a special number on the need for protecting our environment. The program concluded with ceremonial plantation of saplings in the Forest Colony by the department.
