The Governor of Nagaland, Prof Jagdish Mukhi, and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio extended Yemshe greetings to the Pochury community on Tuesday.

Yemshe is celebrated by the Pochury community in October to welcome new harvest – it is a time of rejoicing after a year of hard work.

Traditionally, the festival would begin in the last part of September with different ceremonial rituals observed throughout until it culminated in the first week of October. Now Yemshe is observed only on 5 October, marking the final days of the traditional observance of the festival.

In his greetings to the Pochury community, the governor wrote of the festival: “An important practice is the enthusiastic cleaning of the village by the people.”

He called upon the community, particularly the youths, to take “active interest” in “safeguarding and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Nagas inherently reflected in our festivals.”

Prof Mukhi concluded his greetings by wishing the Pochury community “good health, peace and prosperity.”

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also extended his good wishes to the Pochury community on the day of Yemshe in a Twitter post.

“May the essence of the festival of promoting peace, unity and harmony be strengthened,” stated the chief minister.
