President’s Rule imposed in Manipur following Biren Singh’s resignation

Days after N. Biren Singh stepped down as the Chief Minister of Manipur, the conflict-torn Northeast State was brought under President’s Rule this evening.

The official order issued by Draupadi Murmu, President of India read as:

“In pursuance of sub-clause (i) of clause (c) of the Proclamation issued on this the 13th day of February, 2025 by me under article 356 of the Constitution of India, I hereby direct that all the functions of the Government of the State of Manipur and all the powers vested in or exercisable by the Governor of that State under the Constitution or under any law in force in that State, which have heen assumed by the President by virtue of clause (a) of the said Proclamation shall, subject to the superintendence, direction and control of the President, be exercisable also by the Governor of the said State.”

The present imposition will be the 11th time that Manipur has witnessed the President’s Rule.

Under the President’s Rule, the Central government will take direct control of the state machinery except legislature.
