International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed at Shamator

The Shamator District Administration in collaboration with NCORD, the District Hub for Empowerment of Women, and the Department of Social Welfare observed the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking at the Shamator Town Hall on June 26. The event aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free society, while also promoting empowerment, especially of young girls, as a crucial element in building resilient communities.

The event was marked by enthusiastic participation from students, youth groups, women’s organizations, and members of the public. Various awareness and cultural programs were held under the overarching theme of “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All”.

Representatives from each organizing department also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the critical need to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The program featured a duet song competition, skits on drug addiction and peer pressure, a reels competition on drug awareness and gender empowerment, and a photo contest  to showcast the strength of women and girls. This session was graced by Limasen Longkumer as the Special Guest.

Several talented participants performed duet songs that celebrated girlhood, education, and equality. The heartfelt performances resonated with the audience and set a hopeful and empowering tone for the event.

School and College students and youths performed thought-provoking skits highlighting the dangers of drug addiction, peer pressure, and the power of community support in preventing substance abuse. The performances creatively integrated the dangers of illicit substance abuse and its addition, family and societal consequences and availability of prevention services. It also featured recovery testimonials and linkages to available de-addiction services.

To engage younger audiences, a reels competition was held, where participants submitted short videos with messages centered on drug awareness and gender empowerment. The winning reels were screened during the event and appreciated for their creativity and powerful messaging.

Participants showcased their photography skills by capturing images that represented strength, resilience, and empowerment of girls and women in society. The top entries were displayed at the venue, adding a strong visual component to the awareness campaign.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking. The session concluded with a note of gratitude to all participants and encouraging ongoing awareness efforts.

Earlier, the program began with an invocation, followed by welcome remarks from the SDO of shamator, pledge offered by Imlinungsang NPS, Additional SP Shamator, prevention, treatment and recovery for all was shared by Dr Ezra Anar MO CHC Shamator, NDPS procedure provision by S Birila Brianna empanelled lawyer Nasha Mukt, NMBA master volunteers was launched by Shri Chubatemjen NCS Deputy commissioner, Power Point Presentation on awareness of various components of Mission Shakti was highlighted by Thsanthong  DMC DHEW and vote of thanks was offered by Kudazo Swuro EAC.
