The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), along with its subordinate units, today organized a Candlelight March at Congress Bhavan, Kohima, and at all District Congress Committee (DCC) Bhavans across the State.

The event was part of a nationwide demonstration by Congress units and party workers to strongly condemn the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in Bihar under the direction of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

The NPCC said the decision to implement the SIR at this juncture raises serious concerns over its timing, intent, and transparency, particularly with the nation approaching major electoral processes. It described the exercise as arbitrary and selective, claiming it undermines the democratic principles of free, fair, and inclusive elections.

According to the NPCC, the SIR in Bihar appears politically motivated, aimed at manipulating and distorting voter lists to disenfranchise legitimate voters while favoring vested political interests. “This action sets a dangerous precedent that could compromise the credibility of the Election Commission and the sanctity of the electoral process,” it stated.

The NPCC urged the ECI to immediately halt the SIR in Bihar and ensure no such exercise is undertaken without broad-based consultation, adequate safeguards, and strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct and constitutional norms.

Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the rights of every eligible voter, the NPCC said it would resist any attempt to subvert democracy through authoritarian or coercive measures.
