An orientation-cum-sensitization programme on the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 was held on Wednesday at GHSS Shamator, organised by the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW). The programme aimed to help students understand the risks and long-term consequences of child marriage and to encourage them to stay informed and speak up against the practice.

Shamator Deputy Commissioner, Chubatemjen shared practical insights on why preventing child marriage is crucial for the well-being and future of young girls. He urged students to be aware of their rights, stating that those at risk of child marriage, already married as children, or aware of such incidents should immediately seek help by calling Childline, contacting authorities directly, or pursuing legal annulment.

He stressed that raising community awareness about the law and the harmful effects of child marriage remains a key strategy in preventing it. Education and awareness, he said, are powerful tools that enable young people to protect themselves and support others in their community.

The programme concluded successfully, providing an engaging and informative platform that equipped students with a clearer understanding of the law and empowered them to contribute toward preventing child marriage in their surroundings.
