The National People’s Youth Front (NPYF), Dimapur District, has appealed to the Public Works Department (PWD), Roads and Bridges (R&B) Department, to take immediate steps for the repair and strengthening of the Khughovi Bridge, which has become increasingly unsafe for public use.

In a press release issued on January 31, the NPYF stated that the Khughovi bridge serves as a crucial link for daily commuters, school-going children, patients, emergency services, and the transportation of essential goods between districts. However, it expressed that the present condition of the bridge has raised serious safety concerns among the public. “Visible signs of deterioration and structural weakness have made travel risky, creating constant fear of accidents,” stated the NPYF.

Zato Sumi, President of NPYF Dimapur District, further pointed out that the ongoing dry season is the most appropriate and technically feasible time to carry out repair and maintenance works.

“Delaying repairs until the monsoon season could further damage the structure, increase repair costs, and pose greater risks to human life,” it added.

Urging the department to treat the matter as an issue of public safety, the party reminded that any untoward incident arising from neglect or delay may lead to irreversible loss of lives, which could otherwise be prevented through timely intervention

The appeal called upon the department to conduct an immediate technical inspection of the Khughovi Bridge, take up urgent repair and strengthening works during the dry season, and put in place temporary safety measures until permanent repairs are completed.

“The appeal has been made purely in the interest of public safety, with the hope that the concerned authorities will act promptly and responsibly to prevent any unfortunate incident. The party awaits a positive response and timely action from the department,” stated the NPYF.
