Active monsoon to continue across Nagaland till August 25; thunderstorms, lightning likely

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has forecast active monsoon conditions across Nagaland from August 22 to 25, with light to moderate rainfall expected at a few to scattered places and localized thunderstorms and lightning likely across several districts.

According to the district-wise outlook, August 22 is expected to see thunderstorms and lightning with light rain over Chümoukedima, Kohima, Peren and Tseminyu, while light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in Dimapur, Longleng and Mokokchung. Light rain is also expected at a few places in Kiphire, Meluri, Niuland, Noklak, Phek, Shamator, Tuensang and Zunheboto.

On August 23, light rain is likely at a few places across several districts, including Chümoukedima, Kiphire, Meluri, Mokokchung, Mon, Niuland, Peren, Phek, Wokha and Zunheboto. Longleng and Tuensang may receive light to moderate rain at scattered locations, while thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are likely over Kohima and Tseminyu, among other areas.

On August 24, thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are expected at scattered locations in Longleng, Mon, Peren and Tuensang. Thunderstorms with light rain are also likely over Kohima, Phek and Tseminyu, while Noklak and Shamator may experience localized thunderstorms and lightning.

On August 25, localized thunderstorms and lightning with light to moderate rain are forecast over Longleng, Mokokchung, Mon, Tuensang and Zunheboto. Light rain is likely at a few places in several other districts, including Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Kiphire, Meluri, Niuland, Peren, Phek and Wokha. No active weather warnings have been indicated for Noklak, Shamator and Tseminyu on the day.

The latest five-day rolling rainfall probability forecast for August 21–25 indicates the highest cumulative rainfall over: Mokokchung — 102.51 mm; Longleng — 100.59 mm; Mon — 93.58 mm; Tuensang — 83.84 mm; Wokha — 82.59 mm; Tseminyu — 78.35 mm; Peren — 71.06 mm; Dimapur — 68.30 mm;

Zunheboto — 59.14 mm; and Kohima — 56.15 mm.

Other districts are expected to record comparatively lower cumulative rainfall during the same period.

The NSDMA has advised residents to regularly monitor weather updates through the Safer Nagaland mobile application and NSDMA Weather Portal, follow official advisories and exercise caution during thunderstorms and periods of heavy rainfall.

Motorists have also been urged to exercise particular caution while travelling along vulnerable and landslide-prone stretches, where rainfall could affect road conditions and visibility.
