Eri silk training culminates at Upper Khomi village

A six-day skill development training programme on Eri silk spinning using motorised machines was successfully conducted by the Department of Sericulture, Phek district, at Upper Khomi village under Phek district.

The programme, sanctioned under the State Plan for the financial year 2026–2027, aimed to modernise traditional practices and empower local Eri silk rearers and spinners.

According to an update from Külüpoyi V. Vadeo, VDB Secretary, Upper Khomi village, the training was held from May 4 to 9, 2026.

During the culmination programme, Director of Sericulture, Zacivelu Khamo, attended the event and encouraged trainees to take up Eri silk farming as a sustainable economic activity.

The update stated that the training programme was conducted under the supervision and guidance of departmental officials including Seliya, Assistant Sericulture Officer, Phek; Sentiyangla, Master Spinner; Lachum, Master Spinner; and Atsung, Technician-cum-Training Person.

The resource persons provided hands-on instruction on the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of motorised spinning machines.

During the practical sessions, beneficiaries and village leaders were informed that the motorised spinning machines used during the training would be awarded to successful trainees upon completion of the course.

The trainees were also informed that the machines can be operated using both solar energy and electricity, ensuring functionality even in areas with irregular power supply.

The departmental officials further informed village leaders that assistance would be provided for the construction of Eri silkworm rearing houses. Subsidies would also be extended to upcoming farmers, subject to the viability of the proposals and sites.

Beneficiaries were informed about the availability of a Cocoon Bank facility in Dimapur, where farmers can procure raw materials at subsidised rates to avoid shortages of seed cocoons.

The department also assured that assistance would be provided in the future to help farmers establish reliable market linkages for finished Eri silk products.

Furthermore the update stated that the training programme generated enthusiasm among beneficiaries in Upper Khomi village. The initiative is expected to enhance Eri silk production capacity and livelihood generation in the district through technical training, machinery support and market assistance.
