Deepak Verma, a businessman who runs hardware and multi-purpose shops in Kiphire town recently donated a water filtration facility to Loyola Higher Secondary School (LHSS) Kiphire.

NT spoke to the businessman on what inspired him to take up philanthropy work. Verma shared that one day he visited the school for some work and found out that there was no drinking water facility which should have been made available for students at all times. He said he felt a deep sense of responsibility to do something about it in whatever possible way that he could.

Since that experience, he made a commitment to contribute drinking water facility to the school children of LHSS Kiphire, which was made into reality on June 2.

In appreciation, the school authorities asked him to do the honour of inaugurating the new drinking water facility. On the occasion, Verma encouraged students to be responsible citizens and emphasized his belief that education institutions play a very important role in shaping one’s mindset and personality.

Principal of the school Father Philip Magh expressed his sincere appreciation towards the donor, who regards the school and the students as a family to be taken care of. He noted that the friendship which the school shared with notable entrepreneur is exemplary for the society,

The principal also highlighted that the school, in addition, has allotted eight water taps to the facility, four each separately for male and female students.

The overall filtered/purified water capacity at the moment is between 500 litres to 1000 litres as per the need of the season.

At present, Loyola Higher Secondary School Kiphire has an enrolment of a total of 2015 students and more than 70 teaching staff and non-teaching staff combined.

Despite water being the most basic necessity for people, many schools, both private and government, in the district have failed to provide drinking water facility to school students. This example of setting up a safe drinking water facility for students at LHSS should inspire other educational institutions that are yet to do so.
