The inauguration ceremony of the three-day IIMUN Kohima 2026 was held on May 21 at G Rio School in Kohima.
Rishabh Shah, Founder of IIMUN shared that the organization was established in 2011 with the vision of spreading the concept of “One World” and building an egalitarian society by promoting the idea of India through sensitizing tomorrow’s leaders today. He said the initiative was envisioned as a tool to reduce divisive tendencies and bring about actionable change.
However, he noted that Model United Nations conferences have often become platforms for enhancing school credentials, official gatherings, or other purposes, reflecting in many ways the functioning of the United Nations and various world governments.
IIMUN has pioneered the movement in 220 cities across 35 countries, with nearly 98 percent of those cities having no prior MUN conference before the organization’s arrival. He expressed a sense of responsibility for what MUN has evolved into and emphasized that the organization is now embarking on a mission to help every school and student understand the true meaning of MUN and the Movement to Unite Nations.

According to him, the movement seeks to create “glocal” citizens who appreciate both their own culture and the cultures of the world. He said it is not only about engaging in discussions, but also about bringing meaningful change, even in small ways, while encouraging students not to become “just another United Nations.”
Highlighting the organization’s 15th year, the focus will be on helping students understand why India is a land that can unite nations and why India is more an idea than merely a nation. He added that the vision remains rooted in replacing a highly anglicized elitist mindset with the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and the values of Vedic times. Through its network of 7,500 schools, IIMUN aims to nurture leaders who may not necessarily be Indian by birth, but Indian in thought.
IIMUN is recognised as the world’s largest youth-run non-profit organization. The movement aims to unite the world the Indian way by sensitizing tomorrow’s leaders today and empowering young people to take initiatives in addressing global challenges at an individual level. The objective is to move beyond classroom discussions and create tangible change towards building a borderless world.
The event was also graced by former Governor and Chief Minister, Dr SC Jamir and former Union Health Minister, Dr Harshvardhan
The closing ceremony of the event would be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on May 23.
