The monsoon season has brought havoc to the northeastern state, resulting in five deaths due to rockslides and drowning between June 11 and July 17, as per available data. The heavy rainfall has led to waterlogging, affecting hundreds of people. Damage to houses and roadblocks caused by landslides has been reported in at least 10 out of the 16 districts.

Earlier this month, two individuals lost their lives and three others were injured in sudden rockslides in Chumoukedima district, as reported by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA). Additionally, two people drowned on July 9 and 15 in Dhansipar and Lengrijan in Dimapur, according to NSDMA data.

The incessant rainfall has triggered a severe landslide, cutting off the National Highway 202 between Shamator and Kiphire districts. On Sunday, two houses were damaged in Alahuto colony and near the Catholic Church in Zunheboto district.

The state is expected to experience continuous rain until Tuesday, which increases the risk of landslides, flash floods, roadblocks, and property damage. The government has advised people to avoid high-risk zones and has instructed state disaster response agencies and departments to remain prepared for life-saving measures. Travelers crossing mountainous areas have also been cautioned by the NSDMA.
