Mulungmedem Rogo, the Commerce 2010-12 alumni batch of Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School (MGHSS), organized an Alumni Donation & Endowment Ceremony at the MGHSS Auditorium on May 29.
During the programme, the alumni batch donated KM printer copier and an LED projector for the exclusive use of the Commerce Department. The batch also instituted the “Mulungmedem Cash Award” carrying a cash prize of Rs 5,000 for the next 10 years. The award will be presented to one student from the MGHSS Commerce Department who secures a place among the top 20 in the Commerce stream of the HSSLC Board Examination at the state level.
MGHSS remains the only higher secondary school in Mokokchung district offering the Commerce stream since its introduction in 2002, with no other government or private schools in the district currently offering Commerce at the higher secondary level.
An address on behalf of the alumni was delivered by Tekamedang, President of Mulungmedem Rogo. Speaking on behalf of the Commerce Department alumni batch of 2010-2012, he stated that the group was formed in 2015 with the objective of preserving and strengthening the bond among batchmates through a membership drive initiated by a few former students.
He said that since its formation, the group had undertaken various activities and fundraising initiatives together. After discussions and deliberations, the alumni collectively resolved to make a meaningful contribution to the Commerce Department of the institution.
Tekamedang stated that the group instituted the “Mulungmedem Cash Award” of Rs 5,000 for 10 years for any state topper from the Commerce Department of MGHSS, with the hope that the initiative would encourage and motivate students to strive for academic excellence. He also mentioned that necessary improvements or changes to the initiative may be made in the future according to the needs of the time.
He further stated that the group was honoured to donate a KM printer-copier and an LED projector to the department. Although modest in scale, he expressed hope that the resources would benefit both students and teachers in their academic and educational activities.
He also shared that the group had worked for more than 10 years towards achieving the goal, despite setbacks caused during the COVID-19 period, and expressed hope that their contribution would be beneficial for the department.
In his welcome address, Vice Principal Votiba expressed gratitude to the alumni for their continued support and contribution towards the school, stating that they would “always be a vital part of this school story.” He thanked the alumni for returning to their alma mater from far and near despite their busy schedules to attend the programme.

He also conveyed special appreciation to Teacher Akum of Commerce for taking the initiative in organizing the homecoming programme. Quoting Henry Ford he said, “Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress and working together is success,” while noting that the gathering was not only to celebrate the past but also to envision future successes together.
Highlighting the achievements of the alumni in different professions and fields, he said their contributions are a reflection of the strong educational foundation provided by the school and a source of pride for the institution. He further said that the alumni were not just former students, but “equally vital partners in our present and future,” and encouraged them to continue staying connected with the school and supporting future generations.
Currently the MGHSS Commerce Department has a total enrolment of 102 students, with 59 students in Class 11 and 53 students in Class 12. The Vice Principal confirmed the details to Nagaland Tribune.
The school initially offered only the Commerce stream when it was upgraded to a higher secondary school in 2002. The Science stream was introduced in 2003, followed by the Arts stream in 2010.
One of the PGT teachers shared that the department recorded its highest enrolment last year. He said that earlier, enrolment in the Commerce stream usually ranged between 30 to 40 students, but in recent years the number has increased to above 50.

Speaking about former students, he stated that many alumni are presently working in various banks, business establishments, entrepreneurial ventures and government sectors.
On the comparatively lower enrolment in the Commerce stream despite MGHSS being the only higher secondary school in the district offering Commerce, the teacher noted that Commerce education was not widely known in Nagaland earlier and career guidance opportunities were limited. He added that although the scope of Commerce is vast in India, awareness about multinational companies and wider career opportunities has developed only in recent years.
He further stated that another factor was the reluctance of many students to work or study outside the state. Since there were no colleges in Mokokchung district offering Commerce at the degree level earlier, financial constraints and hesitation to pursue studies outside the district also affected enrolment in the stream.
He informed that the school is trying to accommodate all eligible applicants who wish to pursue the Commerce stream and encouraged the B.com at Fazl Ali College. He expressed hope that the introduction of the B.Com course at Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung last year may have boosted interest among students to pursue higher studies in Commerce within the district.
Currently, the MGHSS Commerce Department has seven postgraduate teachers.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Akumtoshi (PGT), who candidly shared an emotional reminiscence of the alumni batch, recalling that they were the first students he taught after joining the school as a freshly appointed Commerce teacher. He said the batch held a special place in his heart as their warmth and response in the classroom helped him overcome his nervousness as a new teacher and made teaching more meaningful and enjoyable.
He also remarked that while academic grades are important, they do not define a person, but the alumni’s gesture towards their alma mater reflected the kind of responsible and compassionate individuals they had become. He further praised the strong bond shared among the batchmates, stating that their unity and mutual support helped shape their growth and success even beyond school life.
The programme was chaired by Marpokla Pongener (PGT), while the invocation was pronounced by Nokyenkaba (PGT) followed by a dedication prayer by Temjennaro (PGT).
T. Sakumar Jamir of Class 12 Commerce delivered an address on behalf of the present students (Commerce) while the benediction was pronounced by Borjungla of Class 12 (Commerce).
