Continuous heavy rainfall across Nagaland has triggered widespread landslides, flash floods and mudslides, severely affecting several districts, disrupting normal life, damaging homes, roads, agricultural land and infrastructure, while claiming nine lives in Mon district.

According to reports received from the District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs), multiple districts have been impacted, with damage assessment still underway in many areas.

The worst-hit district is Mon, where nine people lost their lives in separate landslide incidents, including five fatalities at Shantham Ward in Mon town. In Naginimora, four persons swept away by flash floods were rescued alive, though one woman sustained a fractured hand and three others suffered minor injuries. However, four persons remain missing, and search and rescue operations are continuing with the assistance of the District Administration, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Police and other line departments.

In Tuensang district, landslides and flash floods affected 12 villages and around 201 people. The disaster completely destroyed 22 houses, while another 25 were partially damaged.

Zunheboto district reported landslides and flooding in around 30 villages, affecting 26 people, while authorities are assessing damage to public infrastructure.

Shamator district witnessed widespread landslides across several locations, affecting six villages and nearly 7,000 people. Damage assessment is still in progress.

In Mokokchung, heavy rainfall and landslides affected 18 villages, impacting 84 people, while district authorities continue to evaluate the extent of the damage.

Longleng district reported landslides in nine villages affecting 102 people. Five kutcha houses were completely destroyed and another five sustained partial damage.

In Kiphire, landslides struck eight villages affecting 34 people and damaging seven residential houses.

Landslides, mudslides and flash floods were also reported from five villages in Noklak, while Wokha recorded landslides and mudslides in three villages. Meluri reported landslides in two villages affecting six people. Detailed assessment is continuing in all affected districts.

The disaster has also caused significant livestock losses across the state. Preliminary reports indicate the death of 11 mithuns, 13 cattle and three pigs in Mon district; 18 pigs in Shamator; 27 pigs in Wokha; five pigs in Tseminyu; four mithuns in Noklak; and one dog and one cat in Kiphire.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Home Department, said it is closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with the DDMAs and other line departments. Search and rescue operations, restoration of essential services and detailed damage assessment are continuing across the affected districts.

The NSDMA has advised citizens to remain vigilant, avoid landslide-prone areas, overflowing rivers and vulnerable slopes during periods of continuous rainfall, and strictly follow advisories issued by district administrations and other competent authorities.
