With the growing incidences of harrassment and assault against Naga girls in Imphal, the Naga Peoples’ Union Imphal (NPUI) issued a press release on December 17 condemning the criminal activities and ransom carried out on innocent Naga girls running beauty parlours in the capital of Manipur.

A press release issued by M.Ngaranmi, President NPUI and Daniel Leivon Lamkang, Secretary Administration, NPUI highlighted the rippling incidents where Naga women running and manning Beauty Parlours in Imphal “are threatened for ransom and some were forced to paid the amounts they demands in some thousands upto lakhs of rupees so far.”

In this regard, the NPUI appealed to the armed miscreants to stop the harrassment of Naga girls running Beauty Parlours in Imphal and in the valley areas too, “to avoid creating any kinds of misunderstanding between Nagas and Non-Naga communities in Imphal and Manipur”. It also urged to the State Government, the Governor of Manipur and the Home Ministry, Govt. of India “ to seriously and immediately look into the incidents at the earliest possible by implementing a proper law and order to protect innocent life and properties and not to harm our Naga Girls in future.”

In the latest incident, the NPUI reported that some armed miscreants had forcibly kidnapped four Naga girls who are from Chandel working in a beauty parlour in Imphal. According to the NPUI, the proprietor and her three staffs were picked up from their beauty parlour by 10-12 armed personnel in two vehicles and where they were taken to Sowambung and Sekta area hill side. The miscreants demanded Rs. ¾ lakhs as ransom, failing which they were threatened with death. “Later, when some of their local friends intervened and spoke to some elders and leaders of the area, they four Naga Girls were released at around 6 pm from Sekta. That, one of the victims who is said to be Aimol girl was physically assaulted and beaten up black and blue where she is now undergoing medical treatment,” stated the NPUI. Even after their release, the armed miscreants continued to harrass them over phone especially to the Proprietor of the Parlour to arrange the said amount within two to three days. It was reported that the accused even threatened them of coming to the Parlour and killing them. The Parlour has been closed because of the threats and apprehension.

In a similar incident on the same day, seven Naga girls belonging to Tangkhul, Maring, Mao and Kabui tribes were kidnapped by some unknown armed miscreant in a Beauty Parlour located at Chingmeirong near Vishal Mall, Imphal. It was reported that the armed miscreants pulled out a pistol and collected all the mobile phones, Aadhaar Cards, took their photos and video, and the mobile numbers of the seven staffs including the Manager and Proprietor. The victims were forced into a Gypsy vehicle and taken to the jungle of Sekta Imphal East District. On reaching the jungle the unknown armed miscreant started physically assaulting the proprietor and Manager with the butt of the gun, sticks, lethal, kicking them and even threatening to shot their legs or kill them. The miscreants had also demanded a sum of Rs. Five lakhs to them and taken two Lakhs from them.

Therefore, the NPUI has stated that any Nagas running any kinds of businesses, small or large, are not safe in Imphal and in the Valley areas of Manipur due to such kinds of Force ransoms, force demands, force taxes, force donations, like any kinds of monetary demands and kidnapped by armed miscreants frequently. “That, Nagas people living in Imphal and valley areas of Manipur are not safe and secured for which Naga Peoples’ Union Imphal appeals to all to be vigilance and alert,” stated the NPUI.

The Union also stated that such harassment, tortured, discrimination meted out against Nagas “may be an indirectly warning to Naga Peoples as a life threat in Imphal and Valley areas of Manipur” leading to fear psychosis and human rights violation to live in Imphal and Valley. “Thereby, we also appeal to all the CSOs of non-naga communities to extend help and support to live in peaceful co-existence in the upcoming future with mutual understanding and kindness to each other,” stated the NPUI.
