Nagaland government to evacuate stranded Nagas in Manipur in day or two

Kohima: The Control Room is communicating with those stranded and many have expressed their desire to come back to Nagaland

The Nagaland Home Department has on Friday informed that it will facilitate the movement of stranded Nagas from Imphal to Nagaland in a ‘day or two’. It has mentioned that the transport arrangements have been made but ‘the security and a few logistic details are yet to be finalized in coordination with various agencies in Manipur.’

The state government assured that it is in touch with the Manipur government to ensure the safety and security of the Nagas in the capital Imphal.

It also informed that the Control Room is communicating with those stranded and many ‘have expressed their desire to come back to Nagaland and their details have been collected.’ The government mentioned that people are unable to move ‘due to lack of public transportation’.

The Home Department further assured that the State Government is doing all it can to facilitate the movement at the earliest and appealed to all to have patience and maintain calm.

Widespread ethnic violence broke out in the neighbouring State of Manipur on Wednesday after a rally was organised by the All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur in protest of the demand for ST status by the Meitei/Meetei community. Many villages have been reportedly burnt down and many are reported to have been killed in the clash between the Kukis and the Meiteis/ Meeteis.

Ukhrul Times on Friday reported that the unofficial death toll had risen to 31. It said that the count at The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal morgue had reached 18 while at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal, the count was at 13.
