Kazan: PM Modi expresses deep concern over widening of conflict in West Asia

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who arrived at Kazan, Russia, on 22nd October 2024, to attend the 16th BRICS Summit met with President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the event.

The Summit, themed “Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,” is being attended by its founding countries of the Organization are Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates will also attend the Summit for the first time. The BRICS is viewed at the geopolitical rival to the G7 bloc.

At the meeting with Russian President Putin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appreciated the Russian Chairship of BRICS and its efforts to strengthen multilateralism, advance sustainable development, and push for global governance reform. The Ministry of Externa Affairs informed that the two leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation in a range of fields.

The leaders also shared views on key regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. PM Modi reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy was the way forward in resolving conflicts, MEA stated.

Meanwhile, at the meeting with the President of Iran, PM Modi welcomed Iran in the BRICS family and the two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed ways to further strengthen cooperation in various fields. They also agreed to continue their cooperation in various multilateral forums, including BRICS and SCO.

Further, PM Modi expressed deep concern over the widening of the conflict in West Asia and reiterated India’s call to de-escalate the situation. He also emphasized on protection of civilians and the role of diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
