The body of a premature baby girl, recovered from the Vekhvürojü River on April 14, was laid to rest on Wednesday following a post-mortem examination and a dignified funeral.
The body was first spotted by a group of frog collectors along the river stretch between Airfield Colony and Humtso village. Sangmou Khiamniungan reported the incident to Wokha Police Station at around 6:40 pm, following which police personnel retrieved the body the same evening.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on April 15 at the District Hospital, Wokha, in the presence of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) members and women police officials, Additional Superintendent of Police, Wokha, Biren Lotha said.

In a solemn and compassionate gesture, the baby was given the name Joanna. With the approval of the district administration, the child was laid to rest at the common graveyard in Wokha. The burial was conducted in the presence of a magistrate, CWC members, and church workers, who ensured that proper funeral rites were performed, giving the child a dignified farewell.
