212th Bhanu Jayanti celebrated in Mokokchung and Dimapur

The 212th Bhanu Jayanti was celebrated with great enthusiasm and cultural pride at the Town Hall, Mokokchung. The programme, organised by the Gorkha Students’ Union, Mokokchung (GSUM), brought together members of the Gorkha community, students, dignitaries and well-wishers to honour the life and literary contributions of Adikavi Bhanu Bhakta Acharya, the pioneer of Nepali literature.

The event was graced by the presence of Atsungba Walling, Additional Deputy Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Mokokchung Municipal Council, as the Special Guest. In his address, he appreciated the Gorkha community for preserving its rich cultural heritage and highlighted the importance of literature and language in fostering unity and mutual respect among different communities.

Walling marked that they are not just celebrating Bhanu Jayanti but celebrating the spirit of community, built on mutual trust and unity.  He recalled the arrival of the Gorkha forefathers in Mokokchung and lauded their shared commitment to peaceful coexistence with the Ao community.

Walling said the long-standing bond between the two communities, strengthened through mutual respect, family ties and inter-community marriages, was a shining example of unity.

Walling also paid tribute to his former teacher and mentor, BB Gurung, saying his guidance had greatly influenced his life and that the merit award instituted in his honour was a fitting recognition of his service to society. Urging the younger generation to remain connected to their roots, Walling encouraged them to preserve their language and culture, continue fostering harmony among communities, and uphold the enduring legacy of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya.

Guest of Honour, Ganesh Rai, Managing Director of Lotus English Boarding School, Dharan, Nepal, also addressed the gathering. He spoke on the enduring legacy of Bhanu Bhakta Acharya and encouraged the younger generation to uphold their linguistic and cultural traditions while contributing positively to society.

The celebration featured cultural performances, songs, recitations and other presentations reflecting the rich heritage of the Nepali-speaking community. Participants paid tribute to the renowned poet whose translation of the Ramayana into Nepali made literature accessible to the common people and earned him the title of Adikavi.

The programme concluded on a note of unity and cultural harmony, with organisers expressing gratitude to the guests, participants and all those who contributed to the successful observance of the 212th Bhanu Jayanti Celebration in Mokokchung.

In the programme, HSLC ,HSSLC toppers were also felicitated. Prize distribution of a literary event held prior to the Bhanu jayanti was also presented

The Gorkha Youth Club Dimapur (GYCD) observed the 212th Bhanu Jayanti on July 13 at the premises of Connorstone College, Duncan Bosti, Dimapur.

The programme was held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya, the pioneer of Nepali literature, whose remarkable contribution in translating the Ramayana into the Nepali language made it accessible to the common people and laid the foundation of modern Nepali literature.

The celebration witnessed the gracious presence of several respected Gorkha dignitaries, senior citizens, community leaders, intellectuals, youth representatives, students, and members of various Gorkha organizations, whose participation added dignity and significance to the occasion.

The Gorkha Youth Club Dimapur reaffirmed its dedication to preserving the rich legacy of Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya and continuing to organize programmes that strengthen cultural values and foster unity within the community.
