A team of artisans from Noklak district, led by Woven Threads, a design label engaged in the design and manufacturing of artisanal textiles in collaboration with artisan communities, along with several artisans from across Northeast India met President of India, Droupadi Murmu.

During the visit, the artisans interacted with the President and shared their stories and experiences of working on the prestigious “At Home” Reception held on January 26. The initiative was undertaken under the aegis of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, with technical support from National Institute of Design.

The project brought together a carefully curated showcase of crafts from all eight Northeastern states of India. Conceptualized and executed through collaborative efforts between designers, entrepreneurs, artisans, and weavers from across the region, the initiative highlighted indigenous knowledge systems, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary creative manufacturing practices unique to the Northeast. The artisans and weavers played a significant role in crafting the invitation kits and representing the rich artistic and cultural heritage of Northeast India.

In a significant milestone, the majority of the 80-member artisan delegation consisted of women from remote regions of the Northeast. For many, this marked their first journey outside their home states, making their visit to the national capital and the Rashtrapati Bhavan a deeply emotional and historic experience.

As part of the Presidential gift from Nagaland, Team Woven Threads x Noklak presented handcrafted home textiles made with Ehlon-niu fibres (stinging nettle and orange wild rhea fibres), a coordinate of three exquisite pillow covers from their newest collection. This collection was supported under the, ‘The Canvas Home Small Grants’ initiative of Handmade To Market, formerly known as Aid to Artisans.

Key institutions and dignitaries associated with the initiative included the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation (NEHHDC), National Institute of Design, and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade.

Prominent leaders connected with the initiative included Piyush Goyal, Jitin Prasada, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Sukanta Majumdar.
