Plantation drives marks World Environment Day in Nagaland

Nagaland State Legal Services Authority in collaboration with High Court Bar Association, Kohima organized Fruit Tree Plantation at the New High Court Complex, Meriema in commemoration of World Environment Day on the theme ‘Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future’  today.

The plantation drive was led by Member Secretary, Neiko Akami, NJS who emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship and collective responsibility in addressing the challenges of climate change.

Akami encouraged all participants not only to plant trees but also to nurture and protect them so that they can grow into valuable assets for future generations.

Stressing that individual action can contribute significantly to environmental conservation, Akami urged everyone to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives and continue supporting initiatives that promote ecological balance and biodiversity. He also noted that the fruit-bearing trees planted at the new High Court Complex would serve as a lasting symbol of the legal fraternity’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Fruit trees including persimmon, avocado, orange, apple, gauva, pears, nectarine among others were planted in the vicinity of the new court complex. Over 40 members from HCBA and staff of legal services participated in the drive.

Wokha:

Along with the rest of the world, Wokha observed World Environment Day with various organisations, societies and community bodies conducting cleanliness and tree plantation drives across the district.

As part of the observance, the Renchen Women Welfare Society, Wokha, organized a tree plantation drive at various locations across the district. The society selected sites where the saplings could be properly nurtured and maintained after planting, ensuring their long-term growth and environmental benefits. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with members of the Wokha Town Council and the Lotha Youth Hoho.

Speaking on the occasion, President of the Renchen Women Welfare Society, Liboni Humtsoe stated that nature has a calming effect and benefits people in many ways. She emphasised that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and called upon everyone to contribute towards creating a healthier and greener environment.

She further stated that when nature thrives, society also prospers, and urged the public to care for the environment and ensure the survival of the saplings planted during the drive. Expressing hope for their healthy growth, she thanked the Forest Department for their contribution in providing saplings.

The society planted ornamental and shade trees in public areas across the district to enhance the beauty of the town and improve the local environment. Saplings were also planted in the main town area below DC office Wokha, Tsumang Lake, educational institutions including Bailey Baptist College and Mount Tiyi College, as well as in government offices, schools and several colonies across Wokha district.

Kiphire:

In observance of World Environment Day 2026, the Kiusam Town Students’ Union (KTSU) organised a Plantation Drive Programme at St. John School, Kiusam, in collaboration with the Kiphire Forest Division and St. John School, Kiusam.

The programme was chaired by Limsuthong N, Information and Publicity Secretary, KTSU. It commenced with an invocation offered by Rev P Rangthong, Pastor of KTBC. Pongsu K Issac, President, KTSU. In his address, Issac extended a warm welcome to the staff of the Kiphire Forest Division, representatives from different NGOs, invited guests, and all participants.

“Our goal is to create awareness and take concrete action. Every sapling planted today is an investment in our future,” he said. He further urged everyone present to cultivate a sense of environmental sensitivity and responsibility and to ensure that the saplings planted are continuously nurtured and protected so that they grow into healthy trees that will benefit future generations.

The programme also featured a special presentation by the students of St. John School, Kiusam, which highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable living.

Short speeches were delivered by various speakers, who commended the initiative and encouraged the community to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts.

Pewsuthong K Yim, representative from the Kiphire Forest Division expressed their appreciation to KTSU for taking the initiative and reiterated the importance of community participation in afforestation and ecological preservation. They also encouraged citizens, particularly young people, to become ambassadors of environmental protection within their respective communities.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Tsusula T, Finance Secretary, KTSU, who expressed gratitude to all collaborating partners, guests, volunteers, and participants for contributing to the success of the event.

The benediction was pronounced by Samuel Kurak, Catechist of St John Church, Kiusam.

The highlight of the event was the formal launch of the plantation drive, led by Rev Fr Thomas Toretkiu, Priest-in-Charge of St John Church, Kiusam. Following the launch, participants planted saplings in and around the school premises as a symbolic commitment to environmental sustainability and a greener future.

Through this initiative, KTSU reaffirmed its commitment to promoting environmental awareness and community engagement, encouraging all citizens to play an active role in preserving nature for present and future generations.

Dimapur 24/7:

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Dimapur 24/7 organized a plantation and distribution drive across the city today, reinforcing its commitment to a greener and healthier environment.

Under the leadership of its Chairperson, Annie Jain, the team successfully distributed 111 plant saplings to local educational institutions and front-line traffic police personnel.

The drive focused on nurturing environmental consciousness among the youth and extending gratitude to the city’s traffic police, who work daily under challenging weather conditions.

As part of the initiative, the Dimapur 24/7 team visited The Maple Tree School and Eden Higher Secondary School, where saplings were handed over to school authorities and students to encourage tree plantation within campus grounds.

Following the school visits, the team hit the streets of Dimapur to distribute saplings to the city’s traffic police personnel, acknowledging their relentless service and promoting urban greening.

Dimapur 24/7 extended gratitude to the management of both schools and the Dimapur Traffic Police department for their warm reception and active cooperation in making the World Environment Day drive a resounding success.

RGHSS:

Nagaland Empowerment of People through Economic Development (NEPED), in collaboration with the NSS Unit and Eco Club of Ruzhukhrie Government Higher Secondary School (RGHSS), observed World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, at the school’s Multipurpose Hall. The programme was held under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,” and was followed by a plantation drive within the school premises.

Commissioner & Secretary and Team Leader, NEPED, Kovi Meyase, NCS, who attended the programme as the special guest, highlighted the importance of responsible human behaviour in preserving the environment and elaborated on the significance of World Environment Day. He stressed the need to raise awareness and take collective action to restore and protect the environment for a secure and sustainable future.

Meyase noted that climate change is a reality and urged people to learn from natural calamities such as landslides, forest fires, and water scarcity. He called upon everyone to work together in safeguarding the planet for future generations.

Providing an overview of NEPED’s objectives and initiatives, Meyase stated that the organisation has been promoting sustainable environmental practices for several decades. He observed that although Nagaland is blessed with rich biodiversity, it has witnessed a gradual decline due to increasing human intervention. Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism, citing growing community awareness and a gradual shift towards more sustainable practices.

Addressing the students, he emphasized their crucial role in environmental protection and stated that education remains one of the most powerful tools for conservation. He encouraged them to contribute individually towards preserving nature and becoming agents of positive change in society.

Senior Principal of RGHSS, A. Mughali Sema, expressed her appreciation for the collaboration with NEPED and described it as a privilege to be part of such a meaningful initiative. She urged students to recognize the importance of conserving natural resources and adopting sustainable lifestyles. Emphasizing personal responsibility in environmental conservation, she remarked that even the smallest efforts can create a significant impact in the years ahead.

The programme was chaired by Moatemsu Jamir, Teacher-in-Charge of the Eco Club, RGHSS, while the vote of thanks was delivered by B Orenvungo Yanthan, Programme Officer, NSS Unit.

The observance concluded with a plantation drive on the school campus, reaffirming the commitment of the school community and NEPED towards environmental stewardship and sustainable development.

LKM:

The Langpangkong Students’ Conference (LKM), in observance of World

Environment Day, undertook a mass cleanliness and conservation drive across all 19 villages under its jurisdiction.

As part of the initiative, the respective villages cleaned and restored their ancestral well (Yimküm tzübu), recognising their cultural, historical and environmental significance to the community.

Simultaneously, LKM organised a plantation drive along the Langpangkong highway stretch, where volunteers from Grace Society Changtongya and student representatives planted tree saplings to

promote environmental sustainability and greener surroundings.

The Conference stated that the initiative was aimed at encouraging community participation in preserving natural resources, fostering environmental awareness and strengthening collective responsibility towards protecting the ecosystem for future generations to come.

JKM:

The Japukong Students’ Conference (JKM) observed World Environment Day with the student bodies across the villages of Japukong Range actively participating in tree-planting and cleanliness drive.

The activities of the day included cleaning public spaces, collecting plastic waste, and ensuring its proper disposal. The day also marked the plantation of more than a hundred of trees within the range. The initiative of Tree-Planting Drive was undertaken based on the theme to restore the natural biodiversity and to decrease localized temperatures through reforestation activity.

JKM expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Forest Range Office Longchem for its generous support in providing over a hundred of free tree saplings.

Further the Conference reaffirmed its commitment to environmental protection and called on all residents to continue supporting initiatives that promote sustainability and ecological restoration.
