Mokokchung based band Stereo Groove released its latest original single and official music video titled “ASCEND” on June 15 at Urban Hub Cafe, Mokokchung, inking a new phase in the band’s evolving musical journey.
Formed in 2022 Stereo Groove began its journey as a gospel music band. While the band continues to hold on to its roots, it gradually explored different sounds and styles, eventually moving towards experimental rock, alternative rock and Math Rock taking shape of a distinct musical identity.
The band comprises Along Jamir (vocals), Wapang Walling (guitar), Ayoung Jamir (guitar), Wabang Jamir (bass), and Lima Imsong (drums).
“ASCEND” is an original composition by the band members and reflects their personal experiences, struggles and growth. According to frontman Along Jamir, the song is about the challenges faced in life and the journey of moving forward despite hardships.
The audio production for the song began in March 2022, while the music video was conceptualised and produced later. Along shared that the release is an important journey for the band as it represents their own creation and the direction they want to pursue as musicians as full time.
“ASCEND” carries a message of perseverance and rising above difficult situations. The band expressed that the song is meant not only to be heard but also felt by listeners.
The band stated that their shift from their early musical style towards a more experimental sound came through years of exploration. The members currently are working on two other new original projects and are planning more releases, including an upcoming EP with a different approach.
Stereo Groove aims to pursue music professionally in the future and maintain originality. The band believes that original music allows musicians to express their own stories, emotions and experiences.

Speaking at the event, Imkumniba Kichu, MMC Councillor, congratulated Stereo Groove and said that the release was not merely a music video launch but the result of an idea transformed through creativity, passion and commitment. He said young talents continue to pursue their dreams despite limited support and that such achievements shows the determination of the younger generation.
Kichu stressed that talent alone is not enough unless it is supported by discipline, courage and the willingness to create something original. He urged young musicians not to limit themselves to imitating others but to develop their own identity through their work.
“A talent without a dream and effort becomes a wasted opportunity,” he said, encouraging musicians to step beyond their comfort zones and use their abilities meaningfully.
He also cautioned young artists about the challenges that come with recognition and popularity, stating that many talented individuals lose their direction after achieving fame. He urged musicians and their families to remain careful of negative influences, particularly substance abuse and other distractions that could affect their growth.
Kichu further emphasized that music should not be viewed only as entertainment but as a medium to carry emotions, messages and stories. He encouraged musicians to compose music that people can connect with and feel, rather than only focusing on performance.
Highlighting the importance of originality, he said that those who create their own music contribute something lasting to society, as original works reflect the artist’s thoughts, experiences and identity. He also called on established bands and artists to support emerging talents so that the local music scene can grow collectively and contribute to the music entertainment in the state and beyond.
